Chapter news

FROM THE PRESIDENT:

NARFE Chapter 1002 has made some changes since the first of the year. We are now a vibrant chapter with 177 members, with all officers in place. We have a new meeting place, The Asia Buffet, 1706 S. Del Prado,  and we are meeting year around on the first Wednesday of every month at 12:00 Noon.

Membership is an issue of concern for our chapter, with a focus on recruitment and retention of members, increasing attendance and active participation in chapter activities.

The average attendance at our meetings is 30.  If you haven’t attended for a while, give it a try. As your new President, I would like to meet every member.

Feel free to call me at 239-4820-6713 or email poandbogre@comcast.net  to share your ideas.

Your continuing support is very much appreciated.

Membership and meeting bonuses. Chapter 1002 has several programs designed to retain members, attract new members, and encourage more members to sign up for Dues Withholding.  Click to read about them.

National News

Healthcare Reform End Game.  The incredibly complex, fast-tracked, must-pass health care reform plans making their way through Congress don't appear to endanger the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. Yet... Whether that glow at the end of the tunnel is daylight, or an oncoming freight train, will be determined when the very different House and Senate plans go to conference where everybody will be looking at a stop-watch. What you are seeing now is almost certainly not what you will get. While things are looking good now, that could change as the Senate and House, under major pressure from the White House, hurry to come up with something (critics would say anything) that can be signed into law this year.  An excellent way to follow the issue is through  www.federalnewsradio.com.

Learn About NARFE-Supported Re-Employed Federal Annuitant Bill S. 629. Through NARFE’s persistence, the bill was included in the final Defense Authorization bill, which is likely to be signed into law. Click here to view a video by Sen. Susan M. Collins, R-ME, about her bill.

Member call for action.  Regardless of whether you have taken any previous action, NARFE President Margaret Baptiste asks each NARFE member to immediately contact his or her Congressional Representative and two Senators.  Urge them to cosponsor Premium Conversion, H.R. 1203 and S. 491, to allow federal civilian annuitants as well as active duty military personnel and retirees to pay health insurance premiums with pre tax dollars as executive and legislative branch employees do now.  You can use NARFE's Legislative Action Center to easily send a message to your own Representative and both Senators, http://capwiz.com/narfe/home/.  NARFE also has a toll free number for phoning the Capitol switchboard, 1-866-220-0044.  Dial the toll free number, ask first for your Representative by name then your two Senators.

Laws can change, so can your retirement benefits!

Active and retired federal employees, your retirement benefits are under attack and the only organization fighting to save them is NARFE.  Here is proof!  According to Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK):

"...if you are a Federal employee...there is no guarantee to your Federal pension based on the economics we face today in this country. If you think it is guaranteed, you have another thought coming because the world economic system is going to determine whether we can honor that pension. That is what is coming. We are very close."
